We are aware of an internet scam currently in operation, in which an email which purports to come from HM Revenue & Customs notifies you that you are due a tax refund, and then directs you to a fake government website for you to enter your bank or credit card details to claim the refund.

Such emails are almost always a scam, but if clients are in any doubt, they should forward them to us for verification.

Any email claiming to be sent from HM Revenue & Customs should be treated with suspicion. Apart from acknowledgements for information sent online, and reminders for returns expected to be filed online, it is not the department’s policy to communicate by email.
